Urban Meyer showing
his recruiting prowess….
The Ohio State Buckeyes’ recruiting fortunes
are in good hands, as demonstrated by new coach Urban Meyer’s first
recruiting class announced Wednesday Feb 1. Meyer signed 25 players to
scholarship, 16 of which were ranked either 5-star or 4-star by recruiting
services. The class ranked in the top five for NCAA programs on signing day.
Meyer is known as an outstanding recruiter,
having established his reputation at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida prior
to Ohio State. His success, in spite of Ohio State’s bowl ban in 2012 and
their losing season in 2011, proves that coaches who are great recruiters
can attract top high school players in spite of other obstacles. When a
player sees other top talent heading to a program, that can encourage them
to sign. Meyer focused on offensive and defensive line talent in this year’s
group, signing three top flight defensive linemen and several highly
regarded offensive linemen. In
addition, at least two top flight wide receivers were signed, adding to a
receiving corps that was young and under used last season. The Buckeyes will
need to improve greatly in the passing game next season to be successful.
The OSU spring game is April 21, mark it down,
a chance to see the first group under Urban Meyer take the field.
College basketball is heating up…..February
has arrived and the college basketball world begins to take more shape. Will
the Buckeyes be able to roll to their fourth straight Big Ten championship?
How about the Dayton Flyers? Faltering now after a nice start in the A-10,
the Flyers need to right the ship to have any chance at a post season bid.
Dayton lacks inside presence, plain and simple, and while the loss of Josh
Benson was masked early, it is showing up now. The Flyers guards need to
help rebound and play defense inside which leaves the perimeter open for
three point bombs. Opponents are
lighting it up from three point land against UD, as the Flyers are short
handed defensively. If they finish
4-4 in their last 8 league games, UD will finish 18-12 (8-8 in league). This
may land them an NIT bid, wait and see.
February games are the prelude to March
madness. Let the pre-madness begin.
